About Hardscrabble Supply

Hardscrabble Supply and Butler Excavation are the results of a family business legacy that started in the 1920s when Thomas Butler, Tim Butler’s great-grandfather, received coal via train to supply customers around Croton Falls, New York. The Butlers of North Salem have been in the excavation and supply business ever since.

Current owner Tim Butler began working with his father, known around the yard as Mr. Jeff, at Yankee Sand and Gravel at twelve years old, and took over the business shortly after graduating from high school.

Today’s Hardscrabble Supply continues to be a family affair. Tim’s brother Jeff partners with him at the landscape supply yard, offers project advice to customers, and makes the occasional delivery. Mr. Jeff was enticed out of retirement to manage the wood recycling lot. Together, the Butlers continue to offer quality service to North Salem and the surrounding area, providing landscaping supplies and excavation expertise.
